Choose online groups for the research, not just the logistics

Online focus groups may be useful when participants are in different locations or when a digital setting fits the experience being explored. The format still needs to serve the research question. Consider who will take part, how they can access the session and whether they will be able to contribute comfortably before deciding on remote fieldwork.

Check participant access and privacy

Device access, connection quality and the environment in which people join can affect participation. Discuss these requirements alongside the respondent profile and topic. Privacy considerations also need attention before the session, rather than being treated as a technical detail after recruitment.

Design for active participation

The guide and activities should help people explain their views clearly in an online setting. Plan the pace of the discussion and the opportunities for each participant to speak. The moderator needs to follow reactions and differences while maintaining a conversation that the whole group can take part in.

Clarify technology and observation needs

Discuss equipment and connectivity constraints, how the client team expects to observe, and what alternatives may be needed if the planned setup is unsuitable. Platform and observation arrangements need to fit the project; they should not be assumed from the choice of an online format alone.

Keep the research process connected

Start with the objectives, then prepare the guide, probes and participant requirements. During the sessions, listen for the experiences and language behind the reactions. Afterwards, use the debrief to organise themes, implications and questions that need more exploration.
