Turn the brief into a workable fieldwork plan
Qualitative fieldwork connects the research objective with the people taking part, the conversations you plan to have and the way findings return to the research team. Those elements need to be considered together before sessions begin, whether the project uses focus groups or individual interviews.
Prepare the respondent profile and guide
Clarify what the study needs to understand, then review the respondent profile and screening questions against that objective. The discussion guide and probes should help those respondents explain relevant experiences, while giving the moderator direction for the session.
Agree the practical setup
Recruitment arrangements, locations, session timing, working languages and recording requirements all need project-specific confirmation. Identify what is already arranged and what still needs to be discussed. An initial brief is a basis for planning, not confirmation that every requested arrangement is available.

Listen and follow the evidence during sessions
The guide provides structure, but fieldwork also requires attention to the issues that emerge in the actual discussion. Neutral follow-up questions help clarify respondent language, experiences and important differences without steering people towards a predetermined answer.
Bring the learning back to the team
A debrief can bring together observations, themes and questions that need further exploration. Align the expected outputs with the research objectives so that the team understands both what was learned and what remains unresolved.
Share the method you are considering, target respondents, draft guide, preferred timing and expected outputs. If some of these are still open, identify them in the enquiry so the next conversation can focus on the planning decisions that remain.
